A clean bill of health...

The moment of truth...

Three months has passed since I embarked on a fitness program.
My aim was weight loss and getting lean.
I walked 10km a day, sometimes clocking up to 20km to burn calories.
My daily calorie burn is roughly about 930 calories.
To get into shape, I split my workouts into two sets. One in the morning and the other late in the evening or at night.
Despite the shitty weather, I pushed on. There's no stopping.
So, having given my blood sample before heading off to Bangkok for my multimedia workshop, my chances to get off medication was good.
I have restricted my diet to greens and lean meat. Rice is only for lunch in a manageable portion.
At night, I eat light.

My hbA1c test - non-diabetic
So, with all that done, my body began to heal.
No more junk food, carbonated drinks. I had beers occasionally, but that was it.
I met Dr. Selva, the man who diagnosed me.
He showed my test results and revealed to me on what to expect.
"Good. I have never seen a patient so determined.
"You had one something right.
"Now, I am taking you off your medication and will decrease the dosage for your hypertension meds. Keep it up, what you are doing..."
Hearing that was like striking a lottery.
I am cleared of diabetes and high cholesterol.
But I am not out of the woods as yet. There's much to do.

Too extreme?

I asked Dr. Selva if my program was too drastic.
He said I was "in-between"
"There are three types of weight loss.
"First, the extreme. You lose 10kg a week. That is not good.
"Next, there's the drastic weight loss, you lose weight rapidly, but in a month or so.
"Lastly, gradual weight loss. Noticeable in three months.
"What you are experiencing, is right in the middle of it."
My goal is to reach 78kg. That is my ideal weight and the Body Mass Index indicates that such is "ideal".

Getting lean...

Every day I workout at the office gym.
There's no excuse and I can't be lazy. I plan this during lunch time and spend an average of one hour doing body weight exercise and lifting weights.
I started with a warm-up session on the bike, clocking in 15-minutes in two sets.
From there, it's the body weight workout.

  • Leg lifts - 10 reps 1 set x 2
  • Stomach crunch - 10 reps 1 set x 2
  • Push-ups - 10 reps 1 set x 2
After the body weight exercise, it's time to curl the dumbbells.
I do two sets with 30 minutes switching from cardio to weight training.
The results are slowly showing. I am not aiming to be a meat head, but rather lean and fit.
Now that I am progressively stronger, I need to add more resistance and maintain my daily routine both walking and at the gym.
Hopefully, in the next 90 days, I will be able to shed half the weight and progress to achieve my goals by the second quarter of next year.

The 10-km challenge

No pain, no gain..

Studies show that the recommended time for weight-loss exercise is half and hour of brisk walking.
If you do this every day, you will shed off some fat from your waist.
On the average, 30-minutes of walking is roughly about 2.7km.
With this, you burn about 382 calories. In one hour, that's about 5.10km and two hours of exercise yields about 10km.
Walking is a low-impact form of exercise and if you decide to change your lifestyle, you can schedule it into your daily life.
I started by walking 5km a day which is split into two sessions: morning and late at night.
Why? Mornings around my neighbourhood can be quiet and since I live in a gated and guarded community, safety is never an issue.
A loop around the neighbourhood is roughly around 1.7km. This is sustainable on a long-term basis.
I begin my walk at 7.30am and to complete 5km, it takes around one hour.

Endomondo is a free-app for fitness

Google Fit utilizes the smartphone's G-sensors for step-count

Technology helps..

To keep track of progress, I use Endomondo fitness tracker. This is complement with my Mi Fit app and Mi Band (which has been bricked).
The Endomondo app has a voice-enabled notification. Once you have activated the app, the first thing it does, is to acquire satellites for a fix on your position.
When you hit the "start" button, the apps begins to record progress. At the end of 1km, it gives your pace and distance.
My average pace per 1 km is between 10 - 12 minutes.
In addition to Endomondo, I had Google Fit installed on my Xiaomi Redmi 2 smartphone. This becomes a back-up solution for the Mi Band and records steps and calories.

Sir Naughty, my 10-year-old Siberian Husky is part of my exercise routine

Atomic Huskies

My highly-energetic pooch provides company during my routine 10km/day walk. I decided to bring them along as they are very active dogs. They need the exercise to expand their energy and walking them in two sessions to clock-in 10km in a day helps.
But, before I took them for the long walk, I got them conditioned for a 2.7km walk and increased the distance to 5.11km and eventually, 10km.
They are comfortable with the distance and also kept me company during the workout.

Eating well

Managing weight-loss is a routine that comes in pairs.
First, you will have to eat right.
Since July 16, I have been going easy on my carbohydrates.
I began by reducing my rice intake.
For breakfast, it's a wholemeal sandwich followed by rice for lunch.
I've began to wean off rice by eating only meat and vegetables for dinner.
It took some getting used to, but I am slowly conditioning my body to accept this.

So far, so good

I weighed-in at 101.0kg in mid-June. I have been walking for a month and clocked-in more than 280km in total distance. My present weight is 92.7km with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28.6 (anything above 28 is considered as "obese"). My target weight loss is at 85kgs and I will begin weight training to firm up my body.
So, is 10km difficult? Not so if you love to walk and split your workout into two sessions in a day.
Commitment is very important in this case and there's really no excuse to be lazy.

The main event this year

I have two months to get in shape for 'projek Mount K'.Seems like my wife Michelle is set to hike up this mountain which is the tallest in Southeast Asia. She made plans with her brother Vincent to head over to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in late June and proceed to Kinabalu Park in Kundasang which is about an hour away from the state capital.Anyway, there's plenty to consider in terms of overal physical fitness. I am going to lay off alcohol for the next two months and eat less fatty food.Get in shape because the bicycle at home is underutilised and walk the dogs even more
